It's illegal to use #2 home heating oil in the fuel tank of a diesel car.
Lots of people do anyway, and their cars create a lot of smoke.

Here in the midwest we don't use home heating oil but here's it's illegal to use "ruby red" off road diesel fuel for two reasons, first road taxes are not collected on it because it's used for farm tractors, combines, etc, and in addition, it's higher in sulfur than on road fuels. Older diesels need the higher sulfur content to lubricate the injection pump.
