Some older stuff like printers and scanners may not have the drivers available to work. I not seen a printer not work yet, but, have a few friends that their scanners not have drivers, but, maybe soon they will.
Vista needs at least 1 GB of RAM really. They may say 512 MB and sell you a computer with 512 MB, so, consider that extra expensive of buying more RAM.
As already mentioned, it has problems that over time we hope Microbutt will iron out, so, you may want to Download their fixes and updates regular.
I had warned my friends to wait, but, some wanted a computer now and Vista what they have. Buying printers and whatevers with the computer did insure everything work better. As I mentioned some did not want to buy another scanner and will wait a while to see what happens.
IF, you could find a computer with Windows XP, that what I would get, but, not sure there any around local. Places like Newegg and Tigerdirect still sell them on-line with Windows XP.

There are other on-line places, but, I not sure you want to go this route.

Short answer...
Everything new with Vista is good... and bad.

Put it this way... XP has been available for 7 years...and it is still not a solid OS. Vista will take some time to get the kinks out of it.

I have used Vista for a year now (started with early release version)...and to be honest, I have had little problems... but problems nonetheless.

Aero will be your most notable difference between previous MS OSsssss.

Good: can not think of anything. ok, one thing, it has better annoying security.

Bad: Its not os10.4 or 10.5

You have to ask your self why is everyone going back to xp or switching to mac.
