Depending on the thickness it can provide much much more flotation ability than say a standard life jacket.

The greater the thickness of the wet suit, the better cold protection and greater flotation.

Remember a wet suit can cover and support the entire body where as the life jacket just wraps around part of your torso and neck.

Ever notice that scuba divers have to wear a tank on their back AND weights to dive to the bottom? An 8mil coldwater scuba suit is really tough to swim in unless you have something to help weigh you down. There are several types of suits, shorties-full body, cold water...each protect differently and have different flotation characteristics

A wetsuit is not a floating device. It's a thermal device. A wetsuit is designed to keep body temperature level, and to prevent hypothermia in cold and deep water. Plus, think about it, -if it provided float for the wearer, how would they dive?

Neither have I, but I think a wet suit's only purpose is to help you stay warmer in cold water.

I don't think a wetsuit gives you any flotation at all. People who dive wear them, leading me to believe they don't provide any buoyancy.

Wet suit's are not made to make you float they are made to keep you as dry as possible and combat effects such as hypothermia.
