From the last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:

"We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, ..."

They were colonies, or territories {if not one of the original 13) until 1776. Those 13 became States, and so did any territory admitted before 1791.

from 1787 to 1791 they country was held together by the Articles of Confederation, so technically it was the first version of the Cofedederated United States.

What's up with the thumb's down? It's true. The states were british colonies before a bunch of farmers with pitchforks whipped the tar out of a bunch of finely tuned, battle hardened brits.
