Ok, so yesterday my computer took a nose dive and was running very very laggy. Moving windows around, laggy... the internet (even on a very small browser) very laggy like scrolling... windows media player.. laggy... etc etc.

Now, it shouldn't do this expecially because i don't really have anything running.. and because i have 2GB of ram and my computer is very fast.

I have run, Spybot, McAfee, Symmatic, adwear.. etc.. in safemode, and it's found stuff, and took care of it.. ran them again.. and they didn't find anything hte 2nd time.

Ran registry cleanup..

Even changed to 95 theme with no effects or w/e... still very very laggy. anybody know whats going on?

I think it is a virous or something, but i can't seem to get rid of it.. anybody have any answers?

More info... my CPU usage bounces from 4% to like 40%.. can't pin down which processes are eating stuff up. from what i can see.. typing in this browser (k-meleon very small browser), uses about 24 CPU percent.. that's can't be good.

moving windows... the CPU bounces to around 55%.. cant see which programs are bouncing.. but yea, aything i do w/ keyboard or mouse.. bounces way up.

McAfee has been running about 10 hours now.. found 1 thing but can't see it yet.. probably another 5 hours left on the scan

sounds to me like you have two anti virus programs running........if that is correct, that will make your machine nose dive well and truely

Use 1 anti virus program only
Spybot Search and Destroy
Lavsoft Adaware personel edition
PC Tools Registry Mechanic

With these installed there isnt much that can get in and break things........good luck

In response to your Additional information, you appear running two anti virus programs (Mcaffee and Symantec), you cannot do that and expect good performance...trust me, uninstall one of them and watch what happens I suggest that Symantec is the one that should be uninstalled

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

Reboot back into normal mode and check the task manager. See if you see a process running most of the CPU time (System Idle doesn't count) or using a stupid amount of the RAM. Perhaps the virus has damaged another program and that program is having issues.

I'd also check the system and application logs if this is 2000/XP/Vista. See if there's any useful information in that.

There are alot of possibilities in your case:
1-It could be a virus or trojan taking system resources....try to run the process manager and take a look, see which file is taking too much memory and cpu source.

2-Run a virus & spyware checker.

3-Delete or clean you junk files using Ccleaner.

4-Get a program called XP Manager or Vista manager for vista OS....the program is from Yamicsoft.

Good Luck.

Yo say you ran Spybot, Mcafee and stuff but that is vague. what did they remove? Virus? Spyware? Sometimes rogue programmes get installed and these general scanners are not made to detect them, and when they still remain there in the system, they can slow down and crash too. If you could say what your scanning tools detected, it may be easier to help.

Maybe you need a new power supply? I have high speed internet and had a similar problem. Eventually my computer would not boot up! Took it to have it fixed and he put in a new power supply and gave it some more RAM. Works fine now! Good luck!
