I believe hair dyes and such say not to do so when pregnant or nursing. I have a feeling that's a CYA sort of thing. Do those dyes go into your blood? Doesn't seem likely.
That said, if your baby is under six months, I would wait, just on the off chance. Their systems are more susceptible to things.
I imagine the smell could be bad and THAT could cause your baby to not want to nurse. It happens to some, change of lotions and the like.

Well, no, don't do it while the baby is latched on - have someone else hold her/him! You can dye your hair before the baby is weaned, though:
"Hair Care Products (dyes, permanents, relaxers)
There is no evidence that hair care products (dyes, permanents, or hair relaxers) used by a nursing mom have any effect on her breastfeeding baby. "
and
"According to theBREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK, published by La Leche League International, no evidence exists that the nursing mother's use of hair-care products, such as hair dyes and permanents, has any effect on her breastfeeding baby. When a mother uses hair-care products, some of the chemicals will be absorbed through her skin. If her scalp is healthy and intact, less will be absorbed than if the skin on her scalp is scratched or abraded."

Should be fine unless you're planning to bleach your hairy nipples/ chest. Would leave the baby's highlights till he's in Reception Class though.

I would wait, the dye might spill onto the baby...and it is hard to do both at the same time, without help!
