My husbands computer got the dreaded blue screen this week and I don't know how to fix it. I can't find the cd to the computer at all and I am trying to avoid buying another windows xp cd. What is possibly the cheapest solution for me to fix it? I will gladly award the 10 points to the correct answer.

We do not use the computer for any porn. The cat jumped on the keys and then the computer went haywire. My husband thought nothing of it. I freaked out. Women do that.

BSD usually happens when a new hardware or software is installed and conflicts with the operating system or hardware.

Try this, start windows if you can; if not press the F8 key when the computer starts up and start in SAFE mode. Then try shutting down and restarting, sometimes this works.

If that doesn't work, try to restart into windows and click START; HELP: and SYSTEM RESTORE and pick a date BEFORE the incident happended and see if that fixes the problem.

BSD does not necessarily mean there is a big problem. As a first step go into Safe Mode (press F8 as windows starts to load) and load last good configuration. If that doesn't help then the next thing to consider is have you installed any new programs recently. If so uninstall them and see if that makes any difference. If neither of these help then we really need to know if there was a code shown on the BSD. That will often help to identify the problem area. Something else that might help is if you run a program like CCleaner (which is free) to clear junk from the registry

If you're using Windows XP you might try a System Restore. Here's a quick way to do it:

1. Start the computer and rapidly hit the F8 function key until you get a plain text screen with various options
2. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight "Last Known Good Configuration" and hit Enter
3. You'll be asked to select your Operating System. Make sure "Windows XP" is highlighted and hit Enter

The computer should come to life. If it doesn't you'll need to show it to a hardware expert.

Have you install any program or install hardware just prior to getting the blue screen of death? If you have, than uninstall the program or remove the hardware because the program or hardware is not XP compatible. If that does not work, try system restore or press F8 before window start and choose 'the last known configuration that work'.

The correct answer is to boot into safe mode, remove any viruses, and determine if you have a hardware problem.
