You should put the vehicle in four wheel drive at least once a month even if its not needed, just to work the mechanism. Same with the ebrake if you dont use it all the time. The noise is rust thats built up after 8 months of not using, it may be frozen. Have the diff and transfer case fluids checked if you dont know how to do it yourself.

Is your 4x4 electric engaged or mechanical? I've found that I get more noise from a mechanical. Some slight noise is normal, but I mean very slight.

Should put your truck in 4 wheel every so often and drive it a bit to keep parts from acting funny. you can put your truck in 4 hi anywhere, just make sure you shift trans into neutral first. Once you hear the transfer case engage, put the trans back in gear and drive away. Never put your truck in 4 low on dry pavement. Be careful turning corners in 4 wheel. Tight turns will cause front end to hop. This wheel hop in turns is normal.
Another thing to consider is if you have auto lock, or manual lock hubs. Most newer pickups and SUV's have auto lock hubs. If you have manual lock hubs, you must engage them by hand before you put your truck in 4x4. If you fail to lock the hubs, nothing will be accomplished by engaging the transfer case.

All that said, grinding is not good. Have someone that is knowledgeable about 4x4 check it out for you.

yeah its not rust as all the gears in the transfer case is under oil. something isnt right and need to be checked out. I have a 4x4 dakota and mine never grinded ever. got the bucking when making a turn and hit a lil dry spot. so you meed to have it checked out. when was the last time the oil in your transfer case was checked or changed. it might be low. could be your hubs also. it can be anything but have a mechanic check it out.

When I got the 98 Durango the dealer said to put the vehicle into neutral to switch to 4x4...even though it was 4x4 on-the-fly.
Even then it always had a slight grind which they clained was normal!!!

The transfer case was not engaged all the way. Stop the vehicle. Place the main transmission on neutral. Automatic - do not place in Park as you may damage the Park pin. Engage the transfer case. Then place the main in gear. If it grinds again then click into neutral & slowly pull the transfer case handle until it clicks in.

A chum of mine replied a similar question for me now not so very some time past - as i seem to get the sick animals as properly: God entrusted this animal to you because of the reality that he knew which you will grant the affection and care that it needed. If basically for 2 days. you're actually not in a position to tell me that this canines did not think of alleviation and think the affection of being on your living for those 2 days! He lived long sufficient to proportion and experience 2 days of love and care. Is that punishment? i don't evaluate so. God would not punish style hearts. yet he will ask you to do it persistently. and you're able to do it persistently ---- for could you do not, who will?

Some grinding is normal when shifting into and out of 4x4. If it was grinding after the shift, you need to have it checked out. It has nothing to do with rust>

something is wrong or it wasn't in 4W all the way. The front axle is a ratio or two slower then the back (just the way it is) So the most that would have happend is a skiping feeling in the front wheels if it's not needed.
