I thought about this last night. The New York Mets were 1 run down when Mookie Wilson came to bat. The famous ground ball error through Bill Buckners leg resulted in only one unearned run. Buckner is all well known for this, The first error in the Wilson at bat is really never brought into conversation, but its a substantial error the cost the lead. Why isnt Bob Stanley scutinized as much as Buckner were did he get immunity?

McNamara wanted Buckner to be on the field for the final out, because he was great that season (and his career actually.) That being said, in hindsight he should've made the normal defensive replacement.

Stanley was the real goat of this game.

Yeah, and the whole 'goat' thing is usually silly anyway. Just as Bartman had nothing to do with the Cubs collapse, a lot of 'goats' weren't goats at all. Joe Pepitone was the goat in the '63 World Series for a 3 base error he made in game 4. The Yankees were SWEPT that year. Pepitone wasn't the goat at all. Koufax, Drysdale, and Osteen beat the holy living crap out of the Yankees. There ARE goats, but, nah, most of them aren't really.

And Schiraldi withered in the bright lights and let the runners on base.

And it all happened with two outs and a two-run lead.

And Gedman could have gloved Stanley's pitch.

And Macnamara should have put Stapleton in for Buckner.

The whole thing went up in smoke as a team effort -- but, alas, Buckner provided the indelible image, the ball squirting just under his glove.

As Chipmaker pointed out there were many culprits on the Red Sox that fateful October night. I think Buckner bears the brunt of it because it was the game ending play.

I am more concerned about the manager not following his normal way of doing business. Dave Stapleton was the normal late-inning replacement for Bill Buckner at first base. If Manager McNamara had done this the whole problem may have been avoided.

Of course, the Sox could have won game 7 and nobody would remember game 6.
