there are rumors the sox offered lester, lowrie, bowden/masterson, and crisp for johan

The red sox have already an amazing rotation.
their weakness is the lineup
i'd rather they go try to trade for a guy like justin morneau and/or joe nathan from the twins witha similar offer plus youkilis and delcarmen

They have a good rotation, but it's difficult to pass up an opportunity to get a 28-year-old who has been easily the best pitcher in the game over the past five years. The offer I had heard was Lester, Crisp, and a minor leaguer, which to me would be a steal. Lester is a decent young pitcher, but there's no chance that he develops into an ace like Santana.

I don't think you can rely on Schilling beyond this season, whereas Santana would be in that rotation for years (assuming a sign-and-trade deal with the Twins). I'm not a Sox fan, but I just don't think you can pass up an opportunity like this, as long as you're not dealing away all of your young talent. Part of the reason for developing these prospects is to use them as trade bait, and I'd take the proven guy over the kids any day.

You're right that the Sox have a good rotation without him, but it could become a great rotation for a while if they make the deal.

I think the Red Sox would have an amazing rotation by adding Santana and they could trade one or more pitchers for other needs. However, I think mostly they are trying to drive the up the price that the Yankees will have to pay to get him.

I think they are trying to keep the Yanks from getting Santana, and why wouldn't they? Santana is great, but he will come at a big cost to whoever is lucky enough to get him.

Haren still has 3 or 4 years left in a cheap contract I think. He'd be an excellent pickup for just about anyone. Good job Cardinals in trading him away. You got Mark Mulder for him - good job!!

It's not that amazing of a rotation. They have beckett, and mastuzaka but other than that they either have old guys (40+ wakefield, schilling) or rookies. Your rolling the dice hoping someone doesn't pull a groin to end their career or still needs some work and isn't ready for the mlb.

I think they are trying to run up the cost, but it still remains a good chance that he will be the guy who replaces Curt Schilling after he retires. Either way they need another top pitcher within a year so this would address that need very nicely and keep him away from the Yankers.

I also agree that you can NOT trade YOUK!

They are looking to have the best pitchers they can get. I would rather those guys go to NE than the New York Yankees.

Because they want to block the Yankees from getting them.

Which really blows, because I'm a Yankees fan!
