But then it would all of a sudden crank and start normally on once of these lucky tries. The battery is relatively new, and the headlights, radio, and power locks all working just fine. This continued for weeks. Now I've run out of luck and I can no longer get it to crank once in a dozen tries. It's a '93 Chrysler minivan. Any body has any idea what I can try before getting it to the mechanics?

your starter solenoid is bad probably. and maybe your starter as well. low voltage from the battery causes the contacts in the solenoid to melt, and the brushes in the starter melt as well. so get a rebuilt starter and solenoid in one box..

The solenoid is faulty. There is a contact plate inside the solenoid which the plunger pushes against two contacts for the starter motor. This plate becomes pitted & consequently does not make a good connection. Usually when the solenoid is in this condition, the starter motor is ready for replacement.

Make sure your battery cables are tight. Check that the pos cable is tight on the starter. Good luck
