Or what about Phil Rizzuto for the Ford Frick Award?

And what about Nettles or Gossage?

LETS GO YANKEES!

PS: For Martin I mean as a manager.

Mattingly's injuries don't get him special treatment for the Hall. It's not for what might have been--if Griffey Sr. hit another 600 home runs, why he would be in the Hall! Gold Gloves for a first basemen are also not convincing--it's where the competiton often includes a lot of old fat guys or DHs with nowhere else to go. Mattingly's peak was too short and not high enough. If he didn't play in New York, I doubt we would have this conversation.

Billy Martin won two WS, but it is not true that "every team he took over got better." Well, not unless finishing 6th and 5th was an improvement. I can't see him as one of the all-time greats.

NO to both.

(Oh, and Rizutto was a sloppy announcer.)

Nettles and Gossage are not bad choices.

Let's go intelligent choices for the Hall! Let's not go team loyalty as a factor in deciding.

Mattingly - Not by the writers, but the HOF keeps changing the rules for the Veterans Committee that it's impossible to guess what they will do in the future.

Martin - He had an amazing career as manager. Substantially improved every team he went to. But I think he'll never get in.

Nettles - If you put Nettles in, you better darn well put Santo and Darrell Evans in first.

Gossage - has a good chance. This may be the year!

Rizzuto was not a great broadcaster. He was quirky and endearing to Yankee fans, but as a broadcaster he was far from special. Just because he broadcasted Yankee games for 35 years or so does not mean he was great. Rest in peace, Scooter. You were lucky to get in the Hall as a player.

Salty has the common misconception that the HOF is only for great players. That may have been the intent at one point, and it may be the ideal, but it is far from the reality. There are at least 50 players in the HOF who could not be considered great.

I don't know. Martin should go in as a manager. He won with 4 different clubs -- went to the post season, that is -- and finished second with the Rangers (a feat in itself). He was colorful and successful. Nettles is an ungodly under rated fielding 3rd baseman, but still not Hall material. Gossage is one of those guys who should go in, and probably should ALREADY have gone in. Mattingly? Almost. Not quite, ultimately, but he sure deserved a look at.

Martin -- strongly doubt ever, but as the Veterans Committee keeps getting revamped, who knows, maybe someday the board will charter the All Other Yankees Committee to ensure that everyone who ever spent one day in the pinstripes gets a plaque.

Mattingly -- as a player, no, not by the writers. As a manager -- well, please, can we wait until he actually takes a manager job before evaluating?

Nettles -- no, but a better choice than the two listed above.

Gossage -- check back on January 8 for the ballot results. I'm thinking he gets the happy ending this time.

I don't think Mattingly has any chance. The period of his career where he was HOF worthy was just to short as was his career for that matter. About half of it he was pretty much league average. If he played outside of NY he wouldn't even have gotten off the first ballot. Much like Lou Whitikar, the long time Detriot 2B, who was much more worthy because of his longevity and position.

Martin's only shot is as a manager and he could probably get in for that but of course its a lesser honor.

Rizzuto is already in as a player so I don't know if they'd even consider honoring him as a broadcaster.

Gossage should get in this year with the weaker class.

I'm really amazed at Chipmaker's answer regarding Mattingly. Let's throw out a few numbers for the heck of it. Lifetime .307 average, .996 fielding percentage, 9 Gold Gloves --- only one first baseman had more grand slams in their career and that was Gehrig. And don't forget that if Mattingly's last 5 years weren't played without serious back pain, his stats would've been even better. How do you not put him in the HOF. That looks really painful Chip, that place where you bumped your head.

I think Billy Martin has a better chance of getting in the hall of fame than Donnie Baseball. I think Billy Martin will make in this year. I think Goosage will also make it.

there are thousands of Wrestlers contained in the WWE Encyclopedia who wrestled for The WWWF/WWF/WWE over the perfect 5 a lengthy time period who're no longer contained in the WWE hall of recognition and Chris Benoit is one in all them. No, Chris Benoit will no longer be chosen by ability of Vincent Kennedy McMahon to bypass into The WWE hall of recognition.
