Make sure the knob is in the "on" position, not on "pilot" (you have to push down and turn to "on")
If thats not the problem, it could be dust or spider webs...turn off the pilot light (make sure it's in the off position) and vacuum it out, relight the pilot light and turn on.
If you have a remote to turn it on, replace the batteries.

I looked at the answers you have received, all good. Safety is most important of all when dealing with gas so turn gas off before taking anything off. My best guess is its the thermostat. If you replace it talk to the person you buy it from and ask them how to replace and what other things it might be that are causing the problem. Go to a good hardware store where the people know what they are talking about some things are best left to profesionals and advice is free alot of the time.

I did a little research and it suggested checking all connections and tubing to ensure that everything is tight and that there are no holes in anything. Apparently if there is a hole in any tubing, the pilot light with light, but there isn't enough flow to actually cause the fireplace to turn on.

Good luck -- so nice of you to try and help your mom & dad.

If your pilot light is on then verify you have power to the gas valve if you have the tools to do that. If you have power to the gas valve then your gas valve is probably bad. It will cost something to fix it if that is the case. Good luck.
PS: one other thing that could hold out your main gas is if your thermocouple is bad or not in the pilot flame. This is a little metal stub that should be setting in the pilot flame.

Find where your thermostat wire connects to the control valve on your gas input to the fireplace. Short the two connections with a piece of wire or something metal. Hold the short on for a few seconds and if the fireplace still doesn't light check to see if the valve is turned to "on". If it is, you need to call a service person.

If when you shorted the connections the fireplace came on, you either have a bad thermostat or an open (broken) wire. To check which, short the wire at the thermostat. If it comes on it is a bad thermostat. If it doesn't it is a broken wire.

How old is it?
Under a year?
It should be under warrenty for 3-5 years. Call the store where you bought it and if it still is under warrenty, they will fix it for free.
