American history and American government courses are different at each and every university, that's one thing you need to know. For example, at my university, there isn't a general American history; instead, its broken up into time periods (pre revolutionary war, after the industrial revolution, etc. and so forth).

Second of all, professors are usually the thing that make or break classes. You could be studying really boring material, but a great professor could make it a lot of fun. Or, you could be studying really exciting material, but a terrible professor could ruin it. Try to find out who is teaching American History I and American Government and what students say about those professors (you can go to ratemyprofessor.com to find out more for yourself). That should help influence your decision.

Personally, I find American Government to be more interesting. We learn about American History our entire lives, anything you study at the college level would really just be a refinement of what you all ready know. You might actually learn new and interesting things in American Government.

As for trips to historical sights...most college classes don't take field trips, so I'm assuming that the user above means that you will have the opportunity to go forth and explore on your own. Question is, will you really have the time to hop in a car and see all the sights?

Go with American History. If you live on the east coast and do any traveling at all, you will have an opportunity to visit historical sites and understand the significance of them. It may not mean anything to you now, but it may when you get older. I can tell you that it was very interesting for my husband and I to visit an old cemetery and find out his family actually had connections to Martin Luther.

I'd chose history over gov. I find all things political and gov related boring. But history is usually pretty cool.

I think it kind of depends on if you'd prefer to know what happened or help make changes by understanding how to.

Well, which did you find more interesting in high school--American History or civics?
