To get performance of 256MB RAM ? Install 256, although today 512 or more is standard !

Do you use a anti virus program? I sure hope not! The lowest to get by with is 512MB of RAM, which is what I have. Even that is too little. I think anymore you would need 1GB. I'm getting 2GB soon.
