Fascinating question. A variation of which I have often pondered. A substance seen under white light is coloured when white light falls on it and all the constituent colours of white light are absorbed except the one or combination that is reflected. A substance is black under white light because it absorbs all the constituent colours. No light is reflected, hence its blackness.

I see a red door and I want to paint it black.

I also asked this question to many people and on yahoo answers.
Most people say that black is not a color but infact a loss of light.
But black is a mixture of mostly blue and some brown.

black is a combination of all colors (ROYGBV).

To prove it, try this:

Take a black felt tip pen, and draw a line on a paper towel. Dip the paper towel in a glass of ethyl alcohol with the line facing down. Wait a few minutes and you'll see different colors forming.

black isn't a colour, it's like silence for the eye.

when you 'hear' silence, it's like when you see black.

black is the absence of light, therefore has so colour.
