I think you referring to the Drive letters.
C: is most times the hard drive
D: is most times your CD or DVD
A: is most times your floppy disk (Those 3" square looking plastics you slide in) Many computers today not use those.

Now, I not try to confuse you. But, every drive will have a
separate letter. You can not have two C: drives. On my computer for example, I have;
A: Floppy
C: Hard Drive
E: Hard Drive
D: CD/DVD Burner
F: Now F: is different. When I plug my USB Jumpdive/Thumbdrive, external hard drive, whatever a person call it or use, then it will show up as F: drive.

I want to add this,
Many computers today not come with backup software like the old days. They may have ONE hard drive and we/they do what is called a "Partition". In street terms we fool the computer into thinking there two hard drives. If, we partition drive C: then we may give the partition a letter like E: so we will see two hard drives like C: and E: when we actually have only one physical hard drive.

On a normal computer, your C drive is your "hard drive", which basically is a hard copy of everything on your computer. It's about the size of a hard-back book, but can store millions and millions of files. They are stored in the form of data. Data, at it's very core, is just a bunch of '0's and '1's. A sequence of eight of these 0s or 1s represents something like a letter, a symbol, etc. Eventually these can turn into documents, programs, and other more complex files that help the computer run. On the other hand, your D drive is usually the main CD or DVD on your computer. When you put a CD or DVD in your computer, your computer searches the D drive for information. It can do this by using a extremely small laser inside the CD player to read what it says (once again in the language of 0s and 1s). From this it can obtain information similarly as it does from a hard drive, as long as the disc spins.
