don't know about that one but you should not wash clothes on new years day or you will wash a member of the family away

That's a new one. Boxing day is St. Stephen's Day, and he was supposed to be the first Christian martyr, but I can't see the connection.
It's also called the Day of the Innocents. This may have something to do with the boys who were killed by Herod, after the birth of Jesus. Not too sure about that, anyway, I still can't see the connection.

I've never heard that, but I agree with Kev.

If you hang your washing out on Boxing Day here in Buffalo, NY it will be frozen.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that giving clothes to the poor is a traditional Boxing Day/Feast of Stephen activity?

I don't know about unlucky, but if you hung the washing out on Boxing Day in Scotland, your washing would be frozen solid within 5 minutes of hanging it out!

I haven't heard that one before but I have heard it said that if you wash clothes on New Year's Day, you wash someone out of your family. My mum used to swear by that one because my grandad died on 3rd January but I put it down to coincidence. Personally I just like to give myself a break from chores like doing the laundry at Christmas and New Year!
