Yes and yes. It is already happening, LOL.
You don't think that a pilot sits at the controls of an AirBus 380 for 13 non-stop hours and FLIES the plane all the way to Hong Kong, do you ?! He programs the plane's FMC (Flight Management Computer) whilst still on the ground and then soon after take off the pilot 'tells' the FMC to take over the entire flight while him and his co-pilot pick up their newspapers and catch up with their news.
Each and every household appliance has a computer chip installed in it.
Have you seen the film "AI" ?? I have no doubt we'll get there. It is logical !! Did you see "I, ROBOT" the film ? We'll get there too.
There is a space craft launched by the US in 1977 (Voyager 1) which is travelling away from Earth at 60,000 miles per hour and which has onboard computers which are still working. Some of those computers perform tasks and the others have a supervisory role (they check that what the other computers are doing is correct). And that was 1977.
---- BTW, mind boggling stuff :::
Voyager 1 is destined to roam space FOR ALL ETERNITY !! The sun will go supernova.... the Earth will disappear in 5 billion years but that tiny space craft will remain in space, all those parts bolted to each other, FOR ALL ETERNITY and one day it will be older than stars themselves..
More likely in my view, no matter how feeble the gravity, some star will attract it and millions after that Voyager will be its satelite... then... it might be hit by some meteorite and it will be blasted apart... but then all those Voyager components will still be in space for ever.... mind boggling stuff !!!!!

Will they? they already are. They put windshields in cars, do all the welding on our vehicles, etc. If they ever take over our jobs completely that would be interesting. We would have to employ our personal robots and earn money with them. There will always be a need for money so it would be very interesting. We will not see anything like that though in our life time. Maybe in a hundred years or so. We will see more mundane and / or dangerous jobs be taken over by robots though.

Robots are walking the Earth right now, flying over the terrain right now, and propelling themselves under our seas right this minute.
It will still take someone to mine the raw materials, fabricate the parts, assemble the parts, and write the programs for their opperation. Robots require a power source and/or fuel which must be replenished after some fixed period of usage.
So someone has to do that, and maintain them when they break down.
So there will be lots of jobs for mankind for years to come.

We might have a much bigger problem than being out of a job once the big brains create robots as smart or smarter than us with the ability to think for themselves. The scenario out of the Terminator movies might go from science fiction to a nightmarish reality.

yes, they walk the Earth, now! (Mostly sit next to an assembly line in one spot) And they will be our slaves for a few years before they replace us. If you are young, you will live to see them be our slaves in most every field. Your kids will see them replace us.
It won't be a violent overthrow like in terminator. Just will make it so there is little to do. We will watch the tele and go to movies (both generated inside computers.) and we will sit and be entertained while the robots go to the stars. They are already on the planet Mars.

I certainly hope so! I would absolutely love to send a robot to do my job, and bring my paycheck home to me.

No, not unless, one is capable of independent thinking, instead of being able to do only what it is programmed to do.
