I have many people who I still call friends that I do not enjoy any more. I have changed and they have not. I have expanded my mind and intellect and they are still the same person they were 20 years ago. I am disappointed at their lack of growth. They still want to get together with me but no longer really interest me.

I could use the "I am so busy" approach, but that would be a lie. Or I could be really slow to return their emails or phone messages, but that would be rude.

How have you dropped friends that insist on getting together but you do not enjoy anymore?

(Yes, I know I sound like a snob, but the question is sincere)

I told one ex friend that "friends were like a garden, no matter how exotic or wonderful smelling a flower may be, once it overpowers my garden it is considered a weed and must be pulled out" she was a little shocked, but it worked

That happened to me too a couple of months ago.
I just keep going out once in a while with 'em, but we don't talk by phone anymore. Besides I like to spend more time with my boyfriend than with old friends.
It's a really ungrateful and snob attitude, but you just can't force yourself to be with people that doesn't understand you at all.
OR you can rather to be tolerant and keep being friends with them.
Good luck.
