My mom is not a computer genius but she likes internet, skype, doing some stuff with powerpoint.
For Christmas i want to buy her a laptop.
Something nice, not too pricey and useful.
Do you have some advice?

HP Pavilion Dv6000 I have had it a short time and it has features I never even noticed on the specs.

I would not however get it with Windows Vista installed. Get the XP operating system.

Get the telephone headset for Skype.

I thought about a toughbook, but have had bad experiences in the past with them. I have taken my new laptop to places I won't mention because it would void my warranty. (LOL)

The power supply is very strange though, it keeps on getting lost. It must be made in the same factory my Television remote control and cell phone are made.

It is just a great machine. I would give it to my mom but she doesn't like computers, Thank God!

Good Luck in your quest

Something like this would be good. It has a built in webcam. 2 gb of ram so it should be able to run all the apps she will want to run at a time. its 649, which is a pretty good price.

This one is 599 a little bit cheaper, a slight bit slower but not by much, it also comes with a wireless opt mouse, a case, and a flash drive. not that the flash drive is really of much use tho.

This one is 499 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8031606 A bit slower but still has 1 gig of ram, can't burn dvds tho,

IF you wait around walmart or bestbuy will have some sort of 399 laptop special again, they both did a few months back.

Yes, for basic computing use at a cost less than $800, consider the HP dv6500t. It has all the features to run applications such as basic web browsing, VoIP, MS office, etc and has an excellent build quality. enable me preface by ability of declaring that i'm a qualified Dell and HP Reseller. I even haven't any more some thing antagonistic to Macs in any respect. truly, i'm especially inspired by ability of the present Macbooks. in case you want the Microsoft operating device, the Dell Vostro computing device has been my modern-day %. for fantastic fee for lowend laptops. in my opinion, you're evaluating apples to oranges. they don't evaluate to at least one yet another as they both have diverse reward. My professional opinion: Macbooks - sturdy (equipped on Unix platform), sturdy classes, common, better rigid criteria, better efficient video modifying skill, means to run XP almost (utilizing application). Dell Vostro - Comes with XP or Vista, versatile with application, a good number of hardware concepts, a lot less expensive. i like to recommend you communicate over such as your instructors first and ask what they'll be utilizing. finally, you'll detect a lot less issues in case you whichever platform they are utilizing.

I have 3 Dell Notebooks (Inspiron E1505/6400, Latitude D620 and Latitude D800) and they are the most reliable in terms of finding upgrade parts at reasonable prices down the road bec there is so many, from large business leases, schools and the Government plus downloading drivers etc is up-to-date. I have heard good things about HP Notebooks but when it comes to HP, I own 2 of their commercial quality business HP Laserjet Printers (not inkjet) as well as 1 HP Color Laserjet 4550 absolu/tely beautiful when your purpose is to impress recipient!

Back to Notebook PCs, I would seriously recommend visiting Dell's outlet site and patiently shopping for specs you want bec systems are LIKE NEW CONDITION except maybe Scratch & Dent and carry Dell warranty (but note you plus pay sales tax for your state and S&H). With respect to Video Card and WiFi, I'm not a gamer but our E1505 has the expensive 256MB ATI card and Intel 3945, plus T7400 and 120GB Hard Drive and I upgraded RAM from 1 GB (adding just a single1 GB memory module to 2GB <= this is SO IMPORTANT & EQUAL PRIORITY to Video Card & WiFi how many modules are factory installed bec supposely VISTA requires 2GB and if Dell or HP notebook you bought had 2 x 512MB = 1GB then bec Notebooks have only 2 slots, in order to upgrade in this situation your old RAM must be discarded to say Craigslist or EBAY for less than you paid. Our Dell Latitude D620 has just standard built-in Intel video and truthfully my eyes cannot tell difference on all 3 Dell Notebooks and Not So Good Broadcom Dell 1390 WiFi, 100GB Hard Drive and only came with 512MB RAM so I bought 2 Dell Genuine 1GB memory modules. The older Latitude D800 has 1GB RAM (2 x512MB), 60GB Hard Drive, Nvdia 64MB Video and did have Dell Broadcom True Mobile 1400 which was so-so and can't compared to Intel ProSet Wireless software for 3945 and 4965. In fact I was so impressed with Intel ProSet for software graphics, tools and connection coverage I went out and upgraded D800 WiFI to compatible Intel 2915...Bottomline don't settle for less than Intel 3945 and don't settle for less than Intel ProSet though I do also have GREAT Belkin Pre-N WiFiCard and Linksys USB G Adaptor with Speedbooster <= Both provide GREAT Coverage in Oceanfront Condo searching for Available Free WiFI...In fact I am going to purchase Belkin or Linksys N USB as backup for my 2 newer Dell Notebook PCs but price is higher than I want currently at $50 to $100 bec quality and customer ratings <= Recommend always Looking at reviews on Amazon, Circuit City, CNET and PC World!

Hope the Above Info Helps!
