Certain neighborhoods are bad, especially in the more northern areas (drugs and violence). But most places tourists visit are relatively fine. Stay out of questionable neighborhoods and you'll be fine.

Parts of the city are very rundown, but that's improved in recent years. builtstlouis.net has a lot about the architecture and state of the city, metro, and Illinois side, both good and bad. St. Louis is currently caught between the historic and the new. Fortunately, a lot of historic buildings are being restored and renovated.

St. Louis is a great city, in my opinion. Just know where to be and not to be. If you're not familiar with an area, be careful or don't go there at all. The county crime rates are much lower, I believe. St. Louis city is separate from St. Louis county, so the crime figured includes only the city.

I've been to St. Louis a few times a year and never felt in danger, but I do mostly stay around downtown and in safer areas.

Probably the crime statistics are concentrated in the city limits of St. Louis. The metro area includes St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Illinois, Jefferson County, etc. If you figure in those populations, I'm sure we'd rank much safer.

I've lived here all of my life. I'm not fearful. I stay out of the bad questionable neighborhoods. Of course, every city - large or small, can have random crime and then there is domestic violence.
