I think this is a case of missing drivers as i had the same problem.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

the above link contains drivers for realtek .download the audio drivers and install them.I think this will solve the problem.

Is this a laptop or a desktop? If it is a laptop, then it's possible your sound module on your motherboard is fried or not functioning. This problem happens a lot with laptops. If it is a desktop computer, you can buy a sound card to fix this problem. If it is a laptop, then it is best to buy an USB onboard sound emulator. Creative labs has one of those. It's like an external sound card that plugs into the USB port.

See if this restores sound.

You may need to when you first start your computer, and hit F 12 and go to the sound section and enable the sound from there, then when you are back to normal board, you will need to go to control panel and see if it is working there.

It can be as simple as you needing drivers for your sound card.

Before going through deep stuff, take a look at your sound card if you have one and google the drivers for it, then download them.

I hope this helps
