Because originally Facebook was for college students as opposed to myspace, which anyone could have. College students are more private and mature than most myspace users, who range anywhere from goofy 10 year olds to ignorant 50 year old rednecks. Facebook was more simple and directed mainly toward connecting you with your classmates. Private: that is how the users have always wanted facebook to be, especially now that anyone can join.

That's one of the selling points of Facebook. You can make your profile visible only to friends, or visible to some or all of your networks. There are a lot of people on the Internet, and some people like the appeal of keeping their personal information a little more to themselves. You can always send the person a message or a poke and see if they respond.

Facebook isnt too private, its probably one of the most sensible social networking sites
If you know someone well enough to want to nose around their profile, you know them well enough to add them as a friend!

Well technically you don't need to add them........... you could 'poke' them and if they 'poke' back then that gives you access for a week without having to add them.
Does make them aware that you're wanting a look at their profile though so thats probably no use to you if you want to stay anonymous.

It maintains your privacy. Why do you want to look at profile's of people you don't know anyway?
