the way the director set the stage.....the lighting and the color of the clothes and furniture all add to the 'sense' of suspense

An old house is a classic setting for a ghost movie,plus the lighting,and not going over the top with special fx,so the film lets your imagination do most of the work.
Try watching films like The Haunting (1960's version) and The Innocents (1960s version),they used similar techniques in those films.

try these:
background music? Is it suspenseful, does it get louder faster etc as more scary things happen.
Lighting? Is it dark/ light, are some things kept in the shadows to keep them hidden so you wonder what they are?
Are there unanswered questions to build suspense? Eg whodunnit.
Every movie has a beginning, climax, and ending.
They generally all have a 'good guy' and a 'bad guy'.
If you know who is good and who is bad then that will give you as a viewer a 'side' that you take.
Just keep it simple, what does it do to build up scariness?
if you're only 9 i'm sure your teacher isn't looking for anything too in depth.

I haven't seen the movie The Others, but most scary movies it is always the music. Have you watched the movie?
The music always lets you know that something bad is coming. Good luck with your project.

If you are 9 your not legally old enough to watch or know anything about the film the others !!!!
