You can't get pregnant until you ovulate - this is usually in the middle of your cycle, however long that is. Keep a record and work it out.

No matter what length your cycle is you usually ovulate 14 days before your NEXT period, not in the middle of your cycle. My cycle is 30-31 days and I ovulate around day 18-19 but my fertile time is from the 14th-20th. I had sex on the 14th, 15th and 16th (even using a condom) thinking i was safe because I wasn't ovulating for a few days. The sperm stay in fertile fluid up to 5-7 days. keep that in mind. So, if your cycle is 40 days then yes you ovulate later in your cycle but within the 2 weeks before you expect your period. If you've just finished your period your chances are low but a woman is known to spontaneously ovulate two times in a cycle (rare i think) so you still need to be protected.

You are right in that you ovulate 2 weeks before your period is due. You can only become pregnant during the 24 hour ovulation period when the egg has been released, sperm can last up to 5 days before dying so providing you have sex in the 5 days up to and including ovulation day then there is a chance you will become pregnant.

The two week before your next period thing is generally only for a standard 28 day cycle. If you have a 40 day cycle, 20 days before your next period, and 20 days after your last would be your most fertile time, so roughly three weeks.

sperm can live for up to two week in the cervix so it is possible to fall pregnant from that time of having sex, however it is rare. the vagina has lots of antibodies, so to speak, that attack sperm while it is in there, any doubts wait till your period is due, and yeah, if you dont want to fall pregnant use precautions!
