A 77-year-old Italian man has been arrested after shooting dead his wife as she lay in hospital.
Police in the Tuscan city of Prato said the man shot his 82-year-old wife, who had Alzheimer's disease, three times in full view of medical staff.

The man told police he did it because he could not stand to see her suffer.

His wife had been diagnosed eight years ago with the degenerative and irreversible brain disorder, which causes dementia and eventually death.

mercy, it's a terrible disease. i think he should have chosen another way tho, as it would've been distressing to other people. maybe it was the only way for him?

Mercy. Only people who have watched & cared for somebody with Alzheimer's disease would be able to understand this man. He did it for love. It was a quicker death than she would otherwise have had.
Not all carers of people with Alzheimer's come thru it o.k. He obviously has suffered and will continue to suffer for what he felt he had to do. Poor man. There must be a better way to help carers and people who have Alzheimer's. Not enough is understood. My father had Alzheimer's, it was absolutely awful. The whole family was touched by it. After watching somebody with this disease you are never the same.

Only someone who has watched a loved one suffer hopelessly day after day can understand how truly maddening it is. I hope the man will be understood to be insane at the time of the murder.

His methods were maybe not the best but this was undoubtedly an act of mercy those who disagree must never have had a relative with similar sufferings.

I honestly wouldn't know unless I was in that positon (hope that never happens).
The human body can only stand so much torture. I am just not sure that usng a gun was the most merciful way of ending that torture.

I think that's mercy, we would'nt let an animal suffer (well most of us) in that way so, why can't we end the misery of a loved one, That poor man must be in a terrible state, but in his heart he knew he done the right thing by her

How sad, I don't know if I would have ended her life as he did, but it probably was in mercy, his life was long over when his wife became ill, he probably doesn't fear prison. Sad Sad.

Mercy and anyone who has had a friend or relative with this condition will tell you that.

The poor man has had to watch his wife go from being the woman that he loves to being totally dependent on him and being a shell of a person

Neither. I'd call it the final act of a desperate man.
