I was never brought up with one and I've never owned a dish washer and I find it's not that hard a task to do by hand. Plus in my house it's a bargaining tool for other things ................... I hardly ever have to do it !!

A little of both. Most houses you buy these days (where I live) come with a standard dish washer, so I suppose if it is there, well, by golly I'll give it a go eh?
I wash all my pots and pans by hand. I find I only put dishes and silver ware and glasses and cups in the dishwasher. And truth is......... I think I only run it once a week.
We use a lot of paper plates and plastic cups during the busy week (Now, I'm feeling guilty that I'm contributing to the trash problem now!). So maybe I need to rethink all of my dishwashing and dish usage habits. I could be the cause for the downfall of western civilization!

I use both; some items require hand-washing.
I tend to disagree about the amount of water needed to wash dishes in the dishwasher. My dishwashers are ultra-conservative and use very little water. They are only run when they are full (usually one machine daily, sometimes the second one every 2-3 days). Now all those dishes are being washed at once rather than one at a time.
Before I get a bunch of Thumbs downs - my dishwashers are Fisher-Paykel dishdrawers; 2 of them fit in the space of one normal dishwasher. Check them out - they rock!

we do our dishes by dishwasher, only when it is full(which is usually every night) with the tea dishes it gets turned on. Every thing goes in there pots, pans, i dont buy anything that wont go in there, the interesting thing is it only uses 9 ltrs of water a cycle. If i was to wah by hand after every meal it would waste 5 times more than that amount, and waste about 1 hour a day!

My father actually prefers to wash the dishes by hand. However this completely grosses me out. Using a sponge to clean the bacteria of a dish then reuusing it for each of the following gross. My mother and I always use the dishwasher adn rinse before the dishes go in. The dishwater reaches a temperature that the a human hand cannot endure which kills more bacteria.

I usually use the dishwasher but half of the time it doesn't clean all the dishes well so I have to go back and wash by hand. It is such a waste of water and time!!

By hand and I'm in the middle of a huge dishwashing marathon. I had to because I ran out of space for all of my dirty dishes. Not to mention I was running out of all clean ones. GROSS! If I had a dishwasher I would get my dishes done in a timely manner at least.

Even if I was poor as a Church mouse and had to ride a bike to wash the dishes in a machine, that's the method I prefer.
Washed enough dishes growing up------in the hot, hot, Summers.
Have the latest model that uses a modest amount of water. Am a recycling freak so all messy dishes set in a large bowl and get rinsed from washing hands, rinsing fruits and vegetables and such.
End up washing light loads and that saves water.
Then we recycle all the water from the sink, in my garden and on house plants.

Well, here in San Diego, CA, I still wash my dishes by hand. I have a dishwasher in my apartment, but have NEVER used it. It would be a waste of water. BUT, I do wish I had my own mini washer and dryer in here instead of the dishwasher!

Fisher and Paykel dishdrawer. It has 2 sectional drawers. I love it to pieces and has only given me grief when one of my kids opened it during the washing process.
When I didnt have a dishwasher, in between times of moving house, I put all the dishes/cutlery/saucepans in the bathtub with washing up liquid....and sprayed it all down once a week. It was fun but not useful in the day to day running of the house.
I dont give a toot about water supply...unless I have absolutely no water. Neither should you. Get a garden water tank and boil stuff if you are that concerned....like after armaggedon.

Both. And surprisingly, a good dishwasher uses less water than washing in the sink - by an average of 2 litres.
