nothing scientific here, just what I think.......I think you need another word there... not shatter..... shatter makes you think of a hollow glass xmas ball that drops to the floor and shatters..... the Earth would be more like a thicker glass ball that was filled with peanut butter.... parts of it may still remain that resemble the ball, even after it's calamity....and from that, gravity could drag in the shards and put it back together in time..... I say this because I believe in the theory of the Earth having been hit by a wandering planet that busted it up pretty good and helped to create the moon from the pieces that flew off the young planet Earth......but it was still held together good enuff to still become Earth with a moon..... it didn't shatter and scatter like the asteroids.... and I think that's because of the liquid nature of the magma and the strong core......(ok, smart folks... how far off am I?.. *smile*)

Of course Yes!! it is nothing new earth has shattered many atimes in past again joined , thrusted and welded again shattered . known geological facts suggest the present shape came from Rodinia , Laurasia/Gondwana to presnt shape all the continents were once positioned at south pole and got drifted later in todays shape , still they are moving , breaking at one place and joining at other, for details read Plate tectonics and continental drift.

Sure, but it wouldn't be like a glass shattering. It would be so violent that everything on earth would instantly die.
