I have often wondered what happens to the money in a winning form a bowl game (ex: Rose Bowl). Does it all go to athletics program or does it get contributed to other programs as well? What is your take?

Everyone is close I intern in an AD's office and what schools do is try to spend as much of the money they can on the trip, that is why they (athletes, coaches, and staff) come back with sweat suits, shoes, watches, hats, per diem, etc. they also charter the most expensive flights and hotels . The remainder of what is left goes into a pot with the rest of the bowl money and it get distributed equally.amongst all the schools in the conference. However the money belongs to the football program.
There is an exception Boise State last year and maybe Hawaii this year are not affiliated with the BCS so since their conference isn't the school get to keep all of the money from the BCS and all other bowl game that they play in that their conference has no affiliation with.

Most of the past few answers are close to being correct. Let's say Ohio State goes to the Rose Bowl, the money they get will get divided into 12 equal shares. There are 11 teams in the Big Ten (go figure) and each would get a share, but Ohio State would get two shares for actually playing in the game. So if OSU is awarded $12 million for playing in the Rose Bowl, they would get $2 million and the rest of the school's athletics programs in the conference would get $1 million.

The money from a bowl game is broke down between severel different things. First off, each teams conference gets a certain percentage of all the money. So if Mizzou and USC were playing in a bowl game, the Big 12 and PAC 10 would each split the money. The money is then divided between each team in that conference. Once the money has been divided between each school, the money is then further divided between all of the athletic programs at that school. The percentages arent even of course. The winner will get a bigger share of the money, and the bigger sports programs, I.E. football and basketball, get the lions share of the money.

The money gets split between all the schools in your conference. Any teams from a conference that goes to a bowl will split the bowl payout with the conference. That's why the mid-majors argue about getting a team in the BCS to get more money for the teams in the conference. If a conference gets two teams in a BCS game then the conference gets a lot more money than others. Only team that get a full payout is Notre Dame but they don't get the $14m. They only get half of that.

Different bowls offer different money to teams. The money goes to the athletic program. At some schools like Penn State, football funds the entire athletic program.

it is distributed mostly in the athletic programs but not limited to sports programs.many schools make it a prioraty to make sure a good amount goes to scholarships and community programs.i like the idea of money being given to the schools to help them but my take is that way too much money is going into the hands of the leadership of some schools.im also pretty sure that alot of the money is used to pay of these outrageous salaries of school deans/presidents/directors/etc.that is not cool, million dollar contracts to those people.
