In the US, Louis will most likely be pronounced Lewis, so be prepared to constantly correct everyone (if you're American). I like Charlie as a nickname for Charles. Very sweet, and when he gets older he can decide to be Charles if he wants a more mature sounding name.
Nice choices!

Name him E, just the initial... I think of New Yorkers when I hear Charlie, for instance "Hey Charlie!" Louis sounds really really French. How about Owen, or Zachery?

I think he personally wouldn't like Charlie as he gets older, though it is cute for a baby and little kid. I think I'd go with Louis.

We have a number of Charles in my family, plus I married a Charles. I like the formal version (Charles) of Charlie because of the many "nick-names"...(Chuck, Chuckie, Charlie, Charley) that a guy can choose to go until he gets older.
.
Kids tend to hate their names anyway, so giving them a "formal" (traditional) type name with several nickname options is always a smart way to go. They can use a "nickname of choice" until they get older. Then they can begin to use their formal name if they want (or need to) have their name sound more dignified for career purposes.
Practice saying the name with the words "Judge", "Doctor", "Officer", "General", "President", "Senator", etc. in front of them.
I mean, you never know what career your son will want to follow, so you should give him a nice formal name he can use if needed.

I agree with all those who suggested Charles and then you could call him Charlie if you wish. Charlie is sweet for a little boy but he may not appreciate it when he is an adult.
