It is a procedure like a pap, but the docotor puts a vinager mixture on your cervix. The spots that turn white she will take a biopsy of. They test that sample and from then they figure out if you need further treatment, such as leep. The colposcopy is definety something you need to take an tylenol before, and the iodine mixture they put in to stop the bleeding does burn. You are awake for the whole process and it goes buy rather quickly. Hope that helps.

A colposcopy is a type of exam done with an instrument called the colposcope. This instrument looks like a large set of binoculars that allows the doctor to be able to examine the cervix further if the pap smear shows something abnormal with the cells. When they see these cells it allows them to be able to take some of the cells as a biopsy to check to see what is going on as to whether the changes that have come back abnormal (out of the ordinary) are precancerous changes or cancer already.

It's when you're pap smear needs closer examination. The procedures are pretty similar to it.
You may need it because your pap smear results show that maybe you have dysplasia or cancer, HPV or ASCUS. It's painless but acetic acid (a bit like vinegar) is put on the cervix which makes the cells in there fill with water so that light doesn't pass through.
Your gynecologist will also use a colposcope which is a large, electric microscope and the bright light on the end of the colposcope makes it easy for them to see the cervix.
I hope that helps :)

After a suspicious smear the next step in investigation is colposcopy. The cervix is painted with a substance that makes the abnormal cells show up. These are then biopsied and either hot or cold cautery is applied to destroy the abnormal area.
A colposcope is the instrument used to view the damaged area:

It's a procedure to look at cells in your cervix. It's basically a little tube with a camera on the end and a little scissor type thing that will take a small sample of cells for analysis.
