Hi Bev,
Congratulations on getting involved with politics. To help you on your way, you can visit these three links, which should be able to broadly explain what each party/ideology stands for and against.

Asking that question in here is only going to get you a heaping pile of biased opinions, but if you research the issue with reliable sources in good standing, you will discover all you need to know.

Well, you have asked for an awful lot of information. I am a Conservative Republican just so you understand where I am coming from.
The first thing you need to understand is the meaning of Left Wing, Moderate and Right Wing. Today's Democratic party leans toward the Left. The Republican Party leans toward the Right. To understand what "Left" and "Right" mean in this context, I will take each to its extreme to see what we find what influences them.
To the extreme, far Left we find Socialism. A totalitarian form of government where a super powerful central government controls everything.
To the extreme, far Right we find Libertarianism. Libertarianism is a form of government where there are almost no restrictions of any kind. This is best represented by a very weak Central Government and what governmental control does exist is at the State level.
Today's Liberals (Democratic Party) are for more Federal Government control of every aspect of your life. This is evidenced by calls for more and more government programs, regulations and intrusions into our everyday lives. This includes Education, Child Day Care, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, School Lunch programs, government subsidized abortions and universal health care proposals as well as for ever higher and higher taxation to pay for these things.
Today's Conservatives are for traditional American values such as; Rugged Individualism, self-reliance, charitable contributions, volunteerism, lowering taxes, returning governmental control to the State Level where appropriate, high moral standards, traditional marriage, traditional family structure, anti-abortion, religious tolerance and patriotism.
Today's Libertarians are for elimination of all taxation except what is needed to provide a minimum level of services, drug legalization and a generally open and unfettered lifestyle based on the principle that as long as you are not huring anyone else, it is Okay to do.
In my own opinion, Liberalism is flawed because while much of what they do they do with good intentions, they never, ever look back to see if it has had the intended effect or not. After many decades of wasted taxpayer money and a lot of damaged lives the it took the Conservative Republicans in Congress to force Bill Clinton to sign a bill into law that finally reformed the Welfare Programs. Until that happened the number of people on welfare increased from year to year as single mothers begat more single mothers. Now the number of people on Welfare has been cut way below half of what it was as they moved from the trap Welfare created into the workforce.
We Conservatives believe that true freedom and happiness cannot be found as long as people are slaves of the Welfare system. Only by helping, urging and ultimately forcing people to learn how to support themselves can those people ever be free to persue their dreams.
Libertarianism, in my opinion, is seriously flawed. It lacks any moral compass and such a system would soon collapse into anarchy.
Liberalism has been so discredited over the years, that absolutly none of the Democratic Candidates will use the title. They, instead refer to themselves as "Progressives", because if they ran as Liberals they could never get elected.
Conservatism is, in my opinion, the best choice. It believes most strongly in the intentions of the Founding Fathers. We believe in a strong yet limited Central Government that should concern itself only with matters that the Constitution defines as the concerns of the Federal Government. And as the Constitution clearly says, all other powers not specifically granted to the Federal Government do not reside with the Federal Government but with the individual States and the people respectively.
Read all you can about the founding of America and the first Constitutional Congress. Learn how the system was carefully crafted to insure the maximum amount of freedom and the minimum amount of government intrusion. These brilliant men wrote and spoke quite clearly and understandibly. Do not accept what others say about them, read for yourself.
Finally, understand that this country is unique in the world. When it was founded every other country believed that the power to govern came from God and went directly to the King, Emperor or whatever who in turn doled it out to his various officials in measured quantities.
However, when America was founded, our Founders dismissed that idea. In this country the power to govern still comes from God but goes to each and every citizen in equal amounts. We, in turn, lend that power to those who govern in measured amounts and for limited time every election.
Liberalism is influenced by Socialism. Socialism seeks to undo this relationship. In Socialism, there is no God. All power lies in the Central Government and the individual is not important, only the collective.
Feel free to email me if you wish to discuss. Always glad to help those interested in learning.
