THE GOLDEN COMPASS,
a new movie targeted at children, will be released
December 7, 2007. This movie is based on a the first book of a trilogy
by atheist Philip Pullman. In the final book a boy and girl kill God
so they can do as they please. Pullman left little doubt about his
intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that "MY BOOKS ARE ABOUT
KILLING GOD."
The movie is a watered down version of the first book and is designed
to be very attractive in the hope unsuspecting parents will take their
children to see the the movie and that the children will want the
books for Christmas.
The movie has a well known cast, including Nicole Kidman, Kevin Bacon,
and Sam Elliott. It will probably be advertised extensively, so it is
crucial that we get the word out to warn people to avoid this movie.

It portrays the church as being corrupt, immoral, and hypocritical. The author is atheist, but it's just religious zealots. I read it along with the other books in the trilogy they are amazing and have won multiple awards. Philip Pullman is genius.

I'm a christian but I'm willing to reserve judgement. A number of Christian groups HAVE come out against it, but then again, the American Conference of Catholic Bishops says the following in a Yahoo! News article;

"taken purely on its own cinematic terms, (it) can be viewed as an exciting adventure story with a traditional struggle between good and evil, and a generalized rejection of authoritarianism."

I also temper any outrage that I might feel by noting that Pullman is an agnostic not an aetheist (at least as stated in the article quoted above) and this book has been quietly winning awards in Britain since 1995. Where was the outrage then?

I would also like to note to any picketing zealots out there that all wide spread protesting will do is sell more tickets. We've seen it before with "The De Vinci Code" and "The Last Temptation of Christ" just to name a few. Many more people went to see these movies than would have otherwise expressly BECAUSE of conservative christian protests.

All of this then still does not even begin to address the fact that 90%+ of the people up in arms about this film have never seen it. I think, for myself at least, before I start painting signs to protest in front of movie theaters, I'll actually go and watch it first before I decide whether it is anti-religion or not.

I think that you have been reading some of the mindless propaganda that has been spilling out.

Are you a Christian? Then, how can you believe that God, an omnipotent being, could be killed or even harmed? That seems to be a problem with the protestors. Why do they believe that someone can kill God? Why are they so terrified about fantasy novels and a movie?

Why didn't they protest "The Devil's Advocate"? No one was worried about that one. There have been many films more worthy of their protest, but nothing was said then. What about "Commandments", in which a man sets out to break as many of them as possible? There are many other films they didn't concern themselves with though some did attack "The Passion of the Christ". Then, after they saw that one, they praised it endlessly! I read many reviews in which people flipflopped from attacking it to recommending it.

So, why throw fits about a fantasy film?

I think that you had better do your own research so that you know both sides of the story. You will find that the actors had no problems with acting in the production.

Besides, where have you been? "The Golden Compass" has been advertised for quite a long time now, regularly on television and many places on the Net, where the ads sort of pop up and movie around. At Y!A, I've been dropping in to "pooh pooh" the frenzied attacks on the movie that is being condemned unseen. Do you think that one film will influence children and adults one way or the other? I just do not understand the furor over this.

To say that the books are about a boy and girl killing God so that they can do whatever they want oversimplifies things. In the books God was a tyrant (he wasn't even God in the sense that he created the world, rather he was just the first angel created and then lied to all the other angels). It's not like they killed him because they wanted to covet their neighbours' wives or something. And the kids aren't even the ones to kill God in the Amber Spyglass.

The Golden Compass was originally published in 1995 (and that's when I read it; I was nine). Rather than it negatively affecting me in anyway I think it affected me positively; it made me interested in etymology and theoretical physics (of course I didn't know these words at the time). If anything led to my dissociation with the Church it was my previous experiences with the Church.

Personally I can say that banning books (and other media)isn't effective. As a child when I found out that two of my favourite books: The View from the Cherry Tree (Willo Davis Roberts), and Jeremy and the Aunties were at one point banned, I just wanted to read more banned books (in fact I found a list of them and started working my way down). But seriously, both Flowers for Algernon and To Kill a Mockingbird were banned at some point. Generally any book worthy of being banned by someone is especially worthy to be read, since they are generally well written, and have good characterization and plots AND THEY MAKE YOU THINK! (I say that they are well written because in order for someone to find the book to be offensive in the sense that it could lead people astray it should be persuasive, which in my mind is synonymous with well written). Literature and arts are about questioning and thinking. If you just feed yourself the same drivel over and over again how are you going to develop your opinions (and also your ability to defend your opinions). If you don't know how the person that you are arguing with thinks how are you supposed to target your argument to them or anticipate what they will say?

I don't understand why it's okay to discriminate against atheists but no one else? So what if the author is an atheist? If he was any other religion it wouldn't be politically correct to say something like don't read his books because he is Jewish or Muslim, so why is it okay to say don't read someone's books because he's an atheist? They have the same fundamental right to freedom of expression, religion and belief as per the lovely Charter as everyone else.

Promoters of the movie aren't hoping that people will go to the movie and be converted to atheism; they are hoping that people will go and then buy the associated merchandise.

Wow... i will drink to that. you recognize- if somebody released a action picture on the subject of the existence and circumstances of Jesus, there could be little or no outcry (aside of perhaps from the Jews, as we had with the enthusiasm). It makes me unquestionably ill whilst issues like this arise because of the fact it exhibits merely how plenty information they opt for to hide. Why can not a artwork of fiction be shown because of the fact it says something opposite to popular perception? isn't this how people as a race develop? We question, then we attempt, then we learn, then question some greater and repeat the technique repeatedly to take up each and every little element approximately even if we are questioning? once you notice a team attempting to silence something this trivial, you recognize that there is a distinctive air of lack of self belief in touch... and the Christian communities opposing the showing of this action picture are showing it in comprehensive view. It scares me how many human beings could somewhat bury their heads in the sand than locate out something that could make slightly scratch of their pristine man made international perspectives... have you ever had your injury today?

Unless they've completely rewritten the plotlines from what they were in the books - no, they're not about killing god. There is a war against God (in the 2nd and 3rd books of the series), but the characters leading that war are portrayed quite blatantly as evil. Saying that is the point of the movie (or the books) is like saying that the Wizard of Oz is about stealing shoes from teenage girls.

This guy bugs me too. People just becoming Christians will be confused if they see this.
In case you haven't heard or read this, as this book (and movie) is being well promoted...

Please read and forward.

Regarding ‘The Golden Compass’
THIS IS A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM
DR. BRYAN CUTSHALL

Yesterday, I was handed a children's book by a staff member who said, 'I think you need to see this.'

The book is published by Scholastic and is part of a collection of books. The book I was given is called The Golden Compass. This children's book is one of the most alarming things I have ever read. What makes it worse is that a movie based on the book premieres in December. Both the book and the movie introduce atheism to children. The story ends with Adam and Eve killing God.

THIS IS A MOVIE THAT WE MUST PROTEST AND OPPOSE AS CHRISTIANS. Please educate yourself on this by checking out the links I have provided below and help me spread the word. Do not remain silent on this issue. This is a time for the family of GOD to stand together.

unfortunately, it's true... There will be a new children's movie out in December called 'The Golden Compass.' The movie has been described as 'atheism for kids' and is based on the first book of a trilogy entitled 'His Dark Materials' written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant atheist and secular humanist who despises
C. S. Lewis and the 'Chronicles of Narnia.' His motivation for writing this trilogy was specifically to counteract Lewis' symbolisms of Christ portrayed in the Narnia series.

Clearly, Pullman's main objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview, 'my books are about killing God.' He has even stated that he wants 'to kill God in the minds of children.' It has been said of Pullman that he is 'the writer the atheists would be praying for, if atheists prayed.'

While 'The Golden Compass' movie itself may seem mild and innocent, the books are a much different story. In the trilogy, a young streetwise girl becomes enmeshed in an epic struggle to ultimately defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God. Another character, an ex-nun, describes Christianity as 'a very powerful and convincing mistake.' In the final book, characters representing Adam and Eve eventually kill God, who at times is called YAHWEH. Each book in the trilogy gets progressively worse regarding Pullman's hatred of Jesus Christ.

'The Golden Compass' is set to premier December 7, during the Christmas season and will probably be heavily advertised. Promoters hope that unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie, that they will enjoy the movie, and that the children will want the books for Christmas. Please boycott the movie and the books. Also, pass this information along to everyone you know. This will help to educate parents, so that they will know the agenda of the movie.

The Golden Compass

A movie to avoid

We need to get the word out about this movie -
it is coming out in December - an atheist produced it,
it is marketed for children and in the end they kill God.
Send this to everyone you know.

Congratulations, you've shown us that you can copy and paste Catholic League propaganda, including the completely dishonest "quote" ("My books are about killing God") that was so out of context as to be a lie.

Is that a question or a statement? Your original question is: The Golden Compass is about killing God? The answer is no. The third book is about killing god. And his helpers.
