I have a Sony Vaio Desktop PCV-RS510 and it requires PC-2700 333MHz DDR Ram and it says it is upgradable to 2gigs but that was back when there was only 512mb max so it can use four of those, but I am wondering if I can use 1gig PC-2700 333MHz DDR with the motherboard. Any suggestions? And it is a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz with HT and I know it is a bit out of date, but is it really super out of date? I don't plan on upgrading to Vista anytime soon, I just want better memory. Ideas? Thanks for your ideas!

Sony doesn't have any published information about the system's motherboard on their website, while the last BIOS upgrade to that motherboard was in 2004. You'd want to contact Sony support

to find out whether the motherboard can support 1GB DIMMs. Meanwhile, upgrading to 2GB will still be plenty of RAM for XP, and your processor in certainly nowhere near being outdated. It's not current, but it's well above the minimum spec for most software and many games. You wouldn't play Crysis with that PC, but you could certainly play Far Cry, or even BioShock (as long as you have a decent video card.)

2 Gig max is the recommendation or your system will actually bog down.
If you really want to add RAM, find 4 Gig of open space on your HDD and add it as virtula memory, no drag on resources and you have instant access to it.
If you do add more RAM than your unit can handle efficiently, you will need a downloaded tool like Riva Tuner to overclock.
If you add that, be sure to read all instructions before using it, it can burn your Mobo up if you se it too high!

XP might not be able to use any more than about 3.5GB of memory. That said, many motherboards are not built with the needed address buss lines to support more than a fixed (less than 4GB) amount of memory--to save costs.

Your motherboard BIOS may limit you to just 2Gb. 1 Gb is fine with XP and 2Gb is already too much. 4Gb in a 32bit OS is just a waste of money since about 750Mb will just sit in the memory hole that is literally invisible to the OS (useless).
