I have been told that the university courses like the bachelor of commerce and bachelor of business are a dime a dozen and they just give you a brief overall knowledge of IT and don't give you specialist skills that you need to command a high salary and these qualifications just get you jobs like working in a company and fixing peoples computers and working in the IT call centers. I want to study in a specialisst field, security interests me, you guys got any thoughts on this?

To get into IT, your degree should probably be something like Computer Science, Information Systems or Systems Engineering. Look closely at the college catalogs for info on what is included in each IT offering.

If you really love technology, then your first priority should be to master a programming language. This is the foundation of all information technology work (despite the claims of some who haven't achieved it). To be a credible IT person, you MUST program. Once you have made your programming bones, then you move on to other things that interest you; security, for example. This mastery comes from a **bachelor of science** degree in either computer science or information science.

Don't waste your time on bunny degrees that do not provide you with the academic rigor required to become a real IT professional.

On the other hand, if you are only interested in the salary, you are looking at the wrong field. IT is not a high-salary career (despite what you may have been told). You can make a comfortable living, but you will not be driving a Ferrari anytime soon. To make real corporate money, you have to be in upper management, which means you have to come from either sales or finance. There is no way around this except to be an entrepreneur.
