If you have not already put it up, you need to cut off about two inches from the bottom of the trunk. Take a big bucket, 5 gal or so, fill it with HOT water to which you add a slug of clorox and a sug of corn syrup. Stir this mixture well and stand your tree in it. The hot water softens up the sap so that the water can get up into the tree, and the bleach and corn syrup help preserve it. A tree can take up as much as 5 gallons of water in the first 24 hrs so keep the bucket topped off with hot water. When you put it in the stand, keep the water level aboout 3" up on the trunk of the tree, and do not shave off the bark to get it into the stand, if you do you take off all the cells that absorb the water. Keep it away from heat vents and fireplaces. It should last at least 10 days -2 weeks.
And when you are done with it, please take it to a city collection point to be ground up as mulch for the city parks, or give it to the conservation agency for use as habitat for fish in lakes, or just put it on a brush pile for shelter for small animals.

You need to cut about 4 inches off the bottom. When trees or any plant for that matter is cut, they seal the wounds with sap. Like if you cut yourself, your body would seal it by clotting blood. When that happens, it can not get any water. And do not add any sugar, because that will cause it to reseal the wound. Instead, put it in warm water,(not cold) and add some plant food to the water. You might also put a couple of drops of bleach in the water to prevent it from getting slimy( that causes bacteria and it will start to decay) Keep you eyes on it as it will take in all the water the first night. Have a Merry Christmas! Byee

eek! Get some Christmas Tree food and make sure there is plenty of water. They drink a LOT the first few days. They will suck down all that water by the end of the night so check it daily. The Christmas Tree food is a powder that has nutrients. Try Wal-Mart. We do that every year and ours is green for a solid month.

Thanks to the California Christmas Tree Association for these helpful facts.
Make a Fresh Cut
*Make a fresh cut on the butt to open up the pores which have been clogged by sap. Cut off at least one-half inch.

The method of keeping it fresh and get it to perk up is cut 1/2 " to 1" off the bottom BEFORE you put it up. Keep adding water to the tree until it has taken a good drink and it slows down on it's thirst . Then put the tree up.
Good Luck !

Merry Christmas

If you are losing needles already you will need a good broom and a dust pan.The tree was cut to early.A good rule to follow is to put the tree up two weeks before Christmas and take it down on New Years day.

I suggest that next year you don't buy your tree so early. Otherwise you have to keep it watered. I would suggest putting some sugar in the water or Walmart sells this "magic tree" stuff that helps the tree last longer. It's only about $0.88.

Along with the fresh cut on the bottom and keeping plenty of water available I would recommend try to avoid a hot environment and drafts as much as possible. Don't set is near a heat vent and keep it cool.

As soon as the tree was chopped down it began to die, so really there is no help.
