No, you are not making sense. What do you mean someone "wakes up and starts molesting your child"?
I am sure liberals and atheists are equally as appalled by child molestation and school shootings as are their more conservative counterparts. Liberal atheists are more likely to see school shootings as a result of poor parenting, bullying and teasing, and an un-fulfilling society while conservative Christian fundamentalists are more likely to think it is because we no longer pray in schools.

The problem is that you are using broad labels to cover a variety of precise political philosophies and theological positions.

Being an atheist merely says that you do not believe in any god or any after-life. In place of having your morals decided by a holy scripture, your morality is guided by your view of ethics.

Liberal merely means that over-all your philosophies place you somewhat left-of-center. Being a liberal on say foreign policy does not mean that you are a liberal on the appropriateness of a balanced budget and neither necessarily dictate a particular position on criminal justice issues.

The real question that you are skating around is whether retribution is justice. Is "an eye for an eye" the appropriate standard for an imperfect human justice system? Given our imperfections, should other principles be used to determine justice.

Alternative principles used in sentencing include deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. Many on the left do over-emphasize rehabilitation and under-emphasize deterrence. Many on the left also emphasize the imperfections in the current criminal justice system and seek reforms to make it fairer to all instead of weighted in favor of those with the most money.

So no, you are not making sense. If you wanted to make sense, you wouldn't be talking general labels but would actually be talking the details of how the criminal justice system works.

As a moderate liberal and Agnostic, I am in favor of harsh sentences for criminals-including the death penalty. I am also in favor of doing what I must to protect my family from harm.

Your scenarios do not make sense. If somebody molests my child, I am going to make damn sure he pays by sending him to prison.

As for the shooter in the high school; what am I going to do about it? The person who committed the crime is dead. Would armed guards in the school solve the problem? Probably not. Would allowing children to carry firearms in class solve the problem? Definitely not. The only thing to do in situations like describe is to grieve and work to prevent it in the future.

I am not a christian so I see no problem with blowing their heads off. I don't believe in no violence, turning the other cheek and loving those that hate me. Those people are called Christians. By the way, I take it your not an atheist but from what you would do in the circumstances you cite your not a christian. What are you?
