Why do some people tell lies even when they know it's wrong?

Do they think it's fun or something? Or do they think their own life is not too exciting to talk about?

I've asked myself the same question and I'm still not sure why. I think the reason probably varies with different people. In the case I have been wondering about I suspect it has something to do with drugs, bad habits, greed and low standards.
