'The Long Goodbye' directed by Robert Altman (1974)
starring Elliot Gould, Sterling Haden, Nina Van Pallandt.
Based on Raymond Chandler's novel originally published in the early 1950s, Leigh Brackett's searing screenplay updates it to 1970s Los Angeles. A bitter cynical film about
private eye Philip Marlowe's investigation of the disappearance of wealthy alcoholic writer played by Sterling
Hayden who gives an hypnotising performance. Marlowe is brill iantly played by Elliot Gould as a vulnerable, shambling loner; the whole cast is wonderful including an early small role for Arnold Schwarzenagger as a mobster. Robert Altman directs with panache; part thriller, part satire on 1970s Los Angeles, part reflection on lonliness and the fantasies we try to live out, this is one of those films where faultless acting, direction, photography and screeplay, all gel together perfectly.

"The Sure Thing" with John Cusack and Daphne Zunica. It is the quintessential 80's movie.
