The football is the briefcase with all the nuclear options in it. A military officer is always close by the President in case it is necessary to open that case. A nuclear war cannot be started with just the President saying lets push the button and go. It takes the President or the Acting President and one other non elected government official to authorize the use of the weapons. That other official is on a very short list. If the first one says no, you cannot shop around until you find one who says yes.

Big Red Button to do what? Is it like one of those buttons you get at Staples that say EASY?

If you mean to launch a nuclear strike or something like that - no. Anything like that requires inputting codes and going through multiple systems, not just pushing a button.

I really doubt it. What if he accidentally set his coffee cup on it??!?!? I'll bet those buttons are in a deep, dark hidden away locked up room in some underground fort somewhere.
