.... and that spinning color light your parents would place under the tree to get the tinsel to look like it was changing colors?

And bubble lights...........those are still pretty cool.

We never had a silver tree. We always had the cheap green tree. I always thought that people with the silver trees were rich. I look back now and know that isn't true. I also thought that people who put silver icicles on their trees were rich. Bubble lights were way out of our league. Our tree smelled like mold from being in our moldy basement. But when I was a kid, unpacking it every year, I thought it smelled like Christmas, and Santie Claus. I liked that smell.

Our tree was cheap, yes. It was cheap plastic with not too many branches. I think we even lost some of the branches by the by so there were gaping holes in the tree. We didn't have too many store-bought ornaments. Our ornaments were things that we kids had made in school - little men that we made out of life saver rolls; styrofoam balls that were decorated to look like poodles; a stupid lump of dough that was painted green and glittered... etc. Those ornaments were pathetic. But we loved them.

I can have all the silver trees I want now and I can buy icicles by the truckload. I can have bubble lights and real store-bought shiny ornaments. But none of those things will measure up to the memories I have of that cheap green tree with holes and handmade cheesy ornaments....

But for the record, those silver trees were HILARIOUS looking back!

I still have a tinsel tree from the 50's and it is in pretty good shape, still. I put it up for our New Year's eve party and decorate it with streamers, silver balls and plastic champagne glasses as a centerpiece for my buffet table. Mine is only about 3' tall. I still have the original box so I can store it well every year.

You can still get bubble lights, I got some new ones at Home Depot this year. I always try to have them on my tree, I love them.

Yeah, I remember those. We had the bubble lights too. I enjoyed putting the tinsel on the tree and we had a real tree back then. I remember trash day, you would see trees on the sidewalk in the neighborhood with the tinsel hanging off.
