I think we become who we are from all the things we experience as we grow. Childhood definitely is so important as we are so impressionable at that stage. However we don't stay the same our whole life (probably not even day to day) so defining moments are happening all the time. Probably the big things like marriage, birth of children, deaths of family/friends make bigger changes in small amounts of time but the little things like day to day happiness (or lack of) probably add up to make our overall personalities.

On a personal level it would be impossible to list what or who has made me who I am. Obviously parents, teachers and grandparents are big contributors along with of course good friends. But it might be someone as fleeting as a person in a shopping centre who told me I had beautiful hair that made me feel attractive about myself that can make a big change in who I am. I think some people/things takes years to impact on us and others only seconds.

My life experiences and situations that I have overcome in my lifetime. The situations that you get thrown into help define you. I kind of raised myself and I think I did a very nice job. I am a great mother, and a wonderful person inside and out. With no help from my mother or father, I just knew that how they were was how I WAS NOT going to be!

The day my mother looked me right square in the face and told me how she never wanted me, only had me because her and my dad were having maritial problems and she thought having one more (me) would glue her precious marriage back together. Then turned right around and told me that she was sorry she ever married my Dad anyway in the first place. She may as well have just stabbed me because it hurt just as bad. For a very long time, and all of my teenage years, I was very self destructive of myself, I really wanted to die. To this day, at 34 years old, I still think about it.

The personality I was born with, the inspiration and limitations of my parents, my education, and most importantly, the religion I chose at 17, and still practice almost 39 years later -Buddhism with the Soka Gakkai International.

My parents
In my senior year of college, I turned in the same paper to two classes: 10-18th century Spanish lit and 18-20th century Spanish lit courses. (The paper was based on a book written in the 18th century.) One professor shared it with another one (because it was good), and the other one said he had seen the paper before. They accused me of plagiarism. I almost didn't graduate.
My parents told me to explain, apologize, and accept any plea deal they offered. My 22 year old self didn't want to do any of that, but I respected my parents enough to listen to their advice. My whole life would have been different if I had not graduated from college and moved west a couple of months later.
