Dogs, because they smell better and you can't cuddle an elephant ;) Otherwise, elephants are pretty dang awesome!

Dogs are more available. You know-supply and demand. Elephants are harder to transport and they eat more. Dogs fit inside a house and a car, and elephants don't. So I vote for dogs.
Now if you live in Africa on a large estate you might find the elephants more handy for riding. And if you have a famine there the elephants will feed more people in a crisis.

Yes, You can sleep, cuddle and hold a dog. You can afford to feed a dog and a it can fit in your house. You do not need a hazmat suit to clean up a dogs dump.

I found out the hard way about elephants...It's hell trying to find a pooper scooper and plastic bag big enough to pick it up..and it costs a bundle to rent a dumpster.
