I'm an Aussie from New South Wales, so yeah, I'd not like being called a yank.

Let's see, my parents (grandparents/aunt/uncles) were from Finland, I was born in Michigan, moved to Delaware and have lived in S.E. Virginia since 1976 (first came here in '67), so you can call me anything you want. I'm a Yankee by birth and a Southerner by choice, and VERY PROUD to be an American, so an 'english fellow' can very much kiss my grits and call me anything he wants from his sad little, monarch ruled island.
I remember several countries saying YANKEE, GO HOME! But when we DID pull out, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YOU'RE TAKING OUR JOBS AWAY, since there were not 'yanks' to work for, and they had to go find a job where the local employers treated them like dirt and paid them lower wages.

Actually you may be surprised to learn that Americans are affectionately called "septics" .... which is short for "septic tanks" ... which is rhyming slang for "Yanks".. .. yes..... even if you are from the south.

True it's a well developed sense of humour in Australia so you ought get used to it. Englishmen are called "poms"... or "pommies" and sometimes "pommie bastards"... these are all well known cricketing terms.

Don't get me started on New Zealanders.

Boy oh boy where did you have that happen to you? I am a hillbillie from Missouri and was stationed in Key West, Florida for over Three years and never heard of anything like that happening to anyone. I never even met any British people of course but I did meet a lot of different people and never heard of any remarks like that.

Not at all. I've trained with many of them. They are very good professional soldiers. I've been to England, partied with them, fought with them, and screwed around with their women, we had lots of fun. British women are very sweet but also extremely independant and that's a good thing. Brit's are very good people.

Nope, I'd just explain the difference. Now, if they kept on after they knew better, I might not look so kindly upon it.

Not at all. It's just a word to me. It can't hurt me at all.
