try to be with him for a long period of time, and if he starts to look nervous or something he might be on need to smoke.

Mints won't cover the odor of smoking. I work with someone who doesn't smoke at work (doesn't stand outside with the other huddled wretches), but I have sat next to her in meetings, and when she talks, I can smell stale smoke on her breath. Her husband smokes, and I suspect she does, once she's home in the evenings. If you are not a smoker, wait till your husband falls asleep and take a whiff of the air coming out of him. If he is smoking, it will smell like a dirty ashtry. There's no way to hide it. It's not just in his mouth; it's in his lungs, in his cells. He will be sweating nicotine.
Sounds like he is embarassed by what he's doing. Did he just try to quit, cold turkey, or did he have some medical help with it? It's such a strong addition. It's understandable if he's fallen off the wagon.
If I was in your position, I would just tell him that I strongly suspect he is smoking, and tell him you're sorry he wasn't able to be successful with his effort to stop this time, but help him set a plan to take another run at it.
What is really gained by debating you are! I'm not! you are! I'm not! ??? If there are not other trust issues, and this is the real issue, just jump past the debate, and ask what you can do together to help him quit again. His continued good health is really an appropriate issue of concern to both of you.

Most likely from his clothes. If he steps outside to smoke, when he comes back in the house you will probably smell it also. If he smokes in the car, you will probably find some ashes, even if he holds the cigarette outside the window. Smokers are drug addicts and he is probably too focused on his addiction to be able to cover up all of the evidence. Just look carefully.
He sounds very guilty, unless they haven't banned smoking where you live and he is going to bars where other people are smoking. You can probably get his hair tested for nicotine, I know they can do this for illegal drugs. I'm sure they have urine tests also, but I don't know how long this stays in the body. Either get the hair sneakily, or just be truthful and ask for some hair to be tested. If he goes somewhere to get tested, go with him to make sure he doesn't cheat. I've heard of people borrowing someone else's urine and hiding it in a bag under their pants to pass the drug test. If he refuses to be tested he is guilty and you saved on the cost of testing him.

I heard this from a smoker... smell his fingers, no amount of purell will take away that smell... if that fails.. replace the purell with aloe vera and see what happens. Smelling his clothes isnt always acurate as he could have been "around" smokers or he could have bathed in cologne... he should really quit, smoking is nasty and there's nothing worst than kissing someone who smokes, yuck!

He could be smoking but don't invade his privacy by making him take a test. If he feels he needs to lie to you he is probably scared of your reaction or doesn't want to hurt you. If you're making him feel that he has to lie to you then there is an underlying trust issue other than the smoking.

Just confront him. If he continuously lies then you have other issues. But, it's usually obvious if someone close to you is smoking. He can deny it, but you are not imagining things. confront him seriously about it.
