It is a timed sound and it sounds like a grinding or rattling. It doesn't have an ice machine. The sound just recently started. and is really irritating and seems to be located at the back of the fridge at the top. I'm associating it with the thermostat but it doesn't always come on in regular intravels so really unsure.

HI, You have fans that go on at timed intervals in the freezer compartment. I do not know how old the fridge is,so I`am just guessing at the noise problem. The fan bearings may be starting to wear out from every day operation. They are easy to replace by taking off back panels in freezer com partment. You could get parts and help at this site.{repair clinic.com}.Good Luck.

All fridges do this as they get older they make different noises. Mine is 6 years old and just recently started making a different noise.
