As a native new yorker- nope as long as you use logic. We've lowered our crime rate drastically since the murderous 1980s. I've riden the subway at all hours of the night (woken up at 6am on the train with all of my **** intact) and walked home alone at the wee hours of 3 and 4am. As long as you know what you're doing and where you're going, you will be fine. People are far more friendlier than portrayed (I hate people's negative perceptions of NYC, especially when they have never lived there). It is dangerously cold around this time of year though so dress warmly.

New York City is the most fascinating city in the world, good luck and if you're visiting, there is SO MUCH to do- rock on!

I am from the Omaha, Nebraska and I will tell you that I felt safer in the streets of New York after midnight than I ever do in Omaha after 8pm!
