A statesman is a patriotic act which the priority is his/her country,a patriotic hero like Dr. Jose Rizal who spent his time and even life for the benefits of his country and filipino people.
(and he's not a politician)
A politician (most) is someone who just good in public speaking and in the contrary is not good indeed!!!
and they are spending most of their time for their personal satisfaction.

In my opinion a statesmen is an politician that unites other politicians in positive directions for the good of the country,
without dividing the country by playing the blame game. They serve with honor and dedicated to be honest (it does not mean they did not make errors in judgment--but their focus is not to make such errors).

I've heard it joked that a statesman is just a dead politician, and that's why we need more statesmen. :)

There's some truth to that. A lot of things seem more noble years later. History gets glossed over.

Politicians and statesmen are basically the same although politicians seem to project a bad image while statesmen are honest.

A politician is a person who's only concern is how he or is party will benefit. A statesman puts aside what is best for himself and is only concerned for his constituents or the country. Joe Lieberman is probably the closest thing to a statesman there is today.
