What is the deal with 666????

Hi, hopefully I can add some insight here to the question. There are so many partial answers already given, but people are missing the biggest point.

First: 6 is the number of man. This is already understood from a cursory glance at Revelation.

Second: The number 666 is the name of the Antichrist. Not a proper name so to speak, as in " Hey, 666 wants to rule the world", but rather a numeric quantity assigned to an alphabetic name. It was common in Greek times to assign numerical value to names. In this case, the predominant theory is that 666 is a cumulative score of the Antichrist's actual alphabetic name, meaning that if you added the numerical value of each letter, it would equal six hundred sixty six. Now to be fair, I cannot state accurately how the numerical qualities are assigned. There are numerous Biblical and Greek scholars who can enlighten folks on this.

3. The above is why people confuse 666 with Nero. Because his name in Greek adds to 666, and because its theorized that John wrote about him, people say he was Antichrist. However, a novice student of biblical text and history can tell you that ALMOST ALL respected scholars date John's Revelation as being written near the end of the first century AD, almost 30 years after Nero's death. It stands to reason then, that if Nero was dead for three decades, then John, when mentioning future events, could not have been describing him.
Additionally, another point that sinks the Nero theory is that the world dominance of the Antichrist seen in Johns visions clearly did not reflect Nero's world ruler status, much less the economic clamp the future Antichrist is said to hold, namely, being able to ensure that EVERY person WORLDWIDE has a stamp on their head or hand in order to buy or sell.
To even show how some people try to make it fit (in wild speculations) in current times, former President Reagan was accused of being the Antichrist, namely because his first, middle and last names all contained six letters.

4. As to why its given to being "Satan's number", this is because in Scripture Satan often is shown being a "Counterfeit" of sorts, and the Antichrist is prophesied as being directly under his control (a la- a Satanic Jesus figure). Hence, Satan is directly tied to the Antichrist and thus directly tied to 666.

I don't exactly understand why the numeral 666 is important, because I don't think it will be that number exactly. I'm referring to Krisykk answer. There is a secret governmental conspiracy theory going around about an organization called the New World Order. Top government officials are supposed to be involved, and the plan is to put inplants in every human being, without the implant you will not be able to buy or sell. I'm sure we will all have different numbers, but the beasts number will be 666. I've often felt that our ss cards are a lesser form of this that will eventually lead to the implants and credit cards are being used as a lesser device also to prepare us for the new system. This societies purpose is to turn us all into slaves, and have only a small minority in control of everything. The government has already begun to experiment with these implants in elderly patients. They are going to claim it is a medical breakthrough, but in reality it is going to be a monitoring and control device. George Bush and his family are supposedly part of this organization, and the war on terrorism was created by Bush and members of this society in order to take control over the Middle East, and put American Banks out of buisness so that there is only one ruling bank, the one that belongs to the NWO. When you stop and look at the facts involved, the theory is quite terrifying because I know where I live many banks have sold out to bigger banks due to the rate of home forclosures and the rapidly declining economy, they are losing to much money. ;-)

Although 666 is supposed to be stamped on the antichrist's forehead the reasoning that many biblical people state that the reason that particular number was chosen to be placed with Satan or his great follower is the following.

In old time's the number 7 was the number of perfection or divine within anything. The number 3 was complete, so 777 would be complete perfection. The number 6 is considered falling short of perfection or worldly 666 means falling completely short of perfection.

It's most likely that it is not 3 6's at all but more likely 616 or another configuration like that. But not 666, the 666 came in later when it made more sense such as regards to Nero etc.
Just a mistranslation basically but the original Greek most likely is not 666.

Seven is the Number for God, the number of perfection, and 6 falls just short of that. The reason 666 is the number for the devil is that the three sixes represent the evil trinity, 777 is for Gods's trinity (father, son, holy spirit) Satan chooses this number to mock God, as he does with the hour 3:00 AM, the devil's so-called witching hour...3 for the trinity, and the opposite of the supposed and generally accepted time of Christ's Death

666 is the number of a man, and its in the bible, God is giving us a hint to avoid the distruction on this world, it is prophetic number and means the climax of evil. God gave me a vision last year regarding the birth of the antichrist about two days before the 06-06-2006. And guess what! the government is talking about national I.D Card, and soon they will be talking of having micro-chip on everyone cos there will be a very great presure on issue with national and international security. And the government of this world would sincerely think they are doing the right thing in everyway but its all to prepare the way for the antichrist. It actually originates for the Roman Emperor Nero, who many Christians believe were the very first to persecute Christians and was also responsible for the Killing of Peter and Paul. Which in turn led people to believe that he was the Antichrist. The number 666 is found in the book of Revelations which many people believe is code for Nero. Also text like this suggested Nero was the Antichrist.

The Ascension of Isaiah is the first text to suggest that Nero was the Antichrist. It claims a lawless king, the slayer of his mother,...will come and there will come with him all the powers of this world, and they will hearken unto him in all that he desires (wikipedia.com)

So the number doesnt necessarily represent Satan, but rather the Antichrist.

People have been VERY confused because they don't understand the book of Revelation in the Bible.

Revelation 13:18 says this:

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.


Look carefully at the actual text and you will note that John did not write “666 (“six hundred threescore and six”) is the mark of the beast, nor did he say “666” is the number of the beast. He specifically and purposefully wrote that the number “666 corresponded to” the “number of the beast which is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred threescore and six.” Neither did John say: “..is the number of man (as in ‘mankind’),” but he specifically wrote: “…is the number of a man,” meaning a particular man.

That particular man to whom John was pointing those “who hath understanding,” is Solomon. “His number” corresponds to “money” as in the amount of “gold” he received in a one-year period:

“Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold.” (I Kings 10:14)

The number of man is 6. 666 is not the number of satan, it is the number of the man called the antichrist. Read the Bible again, this time the last book.
